Professor Ruha Benjamin is an Associate Professor at the Department of African American Studies at Princeton University who specialises in the interdisciplinary study of science, medicine and technology; race-ethnicity and gender; knowledge and power. She is the founder of the JUST DATA LAB and author of Race After Technology: Abolitionist Tools for the New Jim Code (Polity 2019) and the editor of Captivating Technology: Reimagining Race, Carceral Techno-science, and Liberatory Imagination in Everyday Life (Duke 2019) among many other publications. In her research, Professor Benjamin investigates the social dimensions of science, medicine and technology with a focus on the relationship between innovation and inequality, health and justice, knowledge and power.

Serena Natile

Lecturer in Socio-Legal Studies

Dr Serena Natile is a Lecturer in Socio-Legal Studies at Brunel Law School. Prior to joining Brunel University London, Serena was a Postdoctoral Researcher at King’s College London (2017-2018) and an Associate Lecturer and Researcher at Kent Law School (2011-2018), where she completed her PhD in 2016. Serena’s PhD thesis Mobile Money and the Limits of Financial Inclusion: A Gender Analysis of M-Pesa in Kenya explored the narratives and institutions of digital financial inclusion as a development strategy for gender equality by looking at Kenya’s path-breaking mobile money project, M-Pesa. She has recently completed the book The Exclusionary Politics of Digital Financial Inclusion: Mobile Money, Gendered Walls, RIPE Series in Global Political Economy, Routledge.
